Oh, you think a bidet just cleans? That’s cute.

Toilet paper can clog pipes, is causing deforestation, and leads to issues like thinning skin and chafing in our most sensitive areas. There is a better way and the rest of the world already has it figured out: bidets and bidet attachments.
Here in the States, we’ve grown up with marketing that’s reinforced that the only way to be clean in the bathroom is to use toilet paper, and there may be misconceptions that bidets are unhygienic, messy, and difficult to use. The opposite is actually true. Think of it this way — if you got the same stuff on your hands, would you grab a paper towel and rub it off? No. You’d turn on the faucet and wash your hands.
And difficult to use? While some folks hear “bidet” and think of a hose and sprayer attachment or a completely separate fixture next to the toilet, modern bidets are completely integrated into or fit under your toilet seat.
There’s a reason that the rest of the world uses bidets. It’s only prudishness that keeps us addicted to TP. If you’re ready to *ahem* dive in, here’s a list of options, from basic underseat options to the best bidet attachments to full smart toilet replacements.

You unscrew your toilet seat, install Tushy in-between the seat and the toilet, put the seat back on, and connect it to the water line for your toilet.

While I’m talking about Tushy, I couldn’t not mention their latest product. Instead of toilet paper, you fill the Tushy Stand with boxes of their 4-ply bamboo tissues.
One or maybe two are all you need to dry off and get on with your day. What’s nice is that the top of the Stand is the perfect size for your phone. (Because you know you have it in there with you and you need a place to put it.)

If you’re looking for something a little less conspicuous, check out the SlimEdge from Bio Bidet. With a super-thin profile, it’s easy to fit, even in tight toilet stalls. The knob has tactile pressure adjustments so that you can easily and gradually adjust the stream — no more “sitting on a firehose” situations.
Rather than have a single adjustable nozzle like the Tushy, it’s a dual nozzle system for anterior and posterior cleaning. It’s a great low-cost option. Kohler offers a very attractive full toilet seat replacement option. The Puretide QuietClose toilet seat has an integrated bidet that automatically rinses itself after each use (a rather nice option).
Operation of the bidet itself is all done through a very discreet wand that sticks out of the side of the seat. Twist it away from you to turn it on and adjust the wand up and down to change the angle. It’s all rather intuitive and avoids cheeky operational icons. What’s particularly nice is that you can switch out caps on the wand to adjust for your water pressure. The mid-level cap comes installed, but you can increase or decrease the intensity of the stream with one of the other caps.
The seat does have a bit of a hump between the toilet opening and the tank, so you’ll want to make sure that you measure before you purchase. But the fact that this is an integrated seat and bidet makes this feel much less like an add-on to your existing toilet.

I like the touchscreen remote as well. There are controls on the seat itself, but unless you know exactly where to press, they may require a little bit of contortion to see exactly what you’re pressing. Finally, we get to my favorite bidet brand. Toto has been creating luxury bathroom fixtures and seriously lux toilets in Japan for decades. I’m excited to finally see their products in the U.S. This plug-in bidet has an auto open and close lid, a heated seat, night light, pre-mists the bowl to keep things from sticking, cleans the wand and the toilet bowl completely after each use, instantly warms the water with a tankless heater, has a built in dryer, deodorizes the air, and has a remote control!
This is the most luxury you can get in a bidet without switching out your entire toilet. I do wish that it had a stainless steel wand and UV cleansing like other options on this list, but that’s a minor quibble in a product that does its job this well.

The Bio Bidet Bliss BB2000 offers the company’s most premium experience with a heated seat, continuous warm water, night light, remote, and a motorized wand that provides a variety of washes — posterior, feminine, and “vortex.” No, I’m not sure what vortex is and, honestly, I’m a little scared to find out.
The stainless steel wand is automatically self-cleaning to keep minerals from building up and clogging the nozzle. The hybrid heating technology has a tank of warm water to save you from an initial shock, then instantly heats more water as needed. The stream itself uses what BioBidet calls the “bubble method” to aerate the water and clean effectively without using too much pressure.
My only issue is with the included remote (you can choose a white or black remote to fit with your decor). While some might appreciate its physical buttons, I can’t help but see spots where grime will accumulate. Especially compared to the sleek remotes of the Kohler and Toto seats, this looks more like a repurposed scientific calculator. That aside, the BB2000 offers some innovative tech in a place where you never expected innovation to be applied.

The stainless steel wand is self-cleaning, has UV sanitization, and two nozzles for different types of washing. It can even “auto wash” where it runs through a spray and dry cycle.
The seat and water temperature are totally user adjustable via the included remote control. The only problem is that it’s the only way to control the Luxelet E890 — if you lose the remote, you’ve got a very expensive, very fancy toilet seat. That said, I like that the E890 remembers your settings so that you don’t have to adjust them all again next time you sit down.
Best Bidets: Full Toilet Replacements
While a plug-in bidet seat offers just about everything that there is to offer, there’s something to be said from buying a toilet with everything already built in. These ultra-luxe full toilet replacements will turn your bathroom experience into a spa-like pampering.

If you’re looking for the ultimate bathroom experience, the Toto G400 is hard to beat. It raises the seat automatically when you approach, mists the bowl to keep things from sticking, warms the seat, and begins deodorizing the area. Once you’re done you grab the remote and start your saved, personalized cleaning process with warm water, dry things off with the warm-air blower, then walk away, the toilet lid closing behind you. The G400 then determines how much of a flush is needed and uses its 3D flush technology to finish the job with as little water possible.
The toilet itself is coated with a special glaze that keeps waste from sticking to the surface, minimizing the time that you have to spend cleaning it. The self-cleaning wand of the G400 is adjustable for front and back cleansing. You can also adjust the temperature of the water, drying, and the pulsation intensity and type. All of this comfort and automation comes at a very steep price but there’s a reason it’s one of the top toilet brands in the world.

If you’re looking for something a little taller and not quite as bulky, the Kohler Veil Intelligent Toilet is possibly the nicest looking toilet I’ve ever seen. This sleek design hides a jaw-dropping array of features. The tankless design has an integrated stainless steel wand that can adjust the shape of the spray, position and angle of the stream, water pressure, and temperature. It also has pulsating and oscillating modes. Once you’re done, use the integrated warm-air dryer. There’s automatic deodorization as well.
It auto-opens and closes and will automatically flush after you stand up and walk away. The Veil will then enter a self-cleaning mode using UV light. Additional features include a heated seat, LED night light, and touchscreen remote. And if you’re stuck without power, the Veil can handle up to 100 flushes during outages. I’ll be honest, it’s taken U.S. companies a while to start offering products that matched the luxury options of companies like Toto, but Kohler has done it with the Veil.
